Why I Hope Identity Theft is Not Like a Spider Bite

Did you ever see the Friends episode when Monica (Courtney Cox) was a victim of identity theft?  I loved that episode.

Basically another woman stole Monica’s identity and applied for a few credit cards in her name. When Monica discovered this, she went to the places the woman was charging things and started following her. The “fake” Monica was doing all sorts of fun things like:

  • Auditioning for a Broadway Play
  • Taking Dance Classes
  • and other things I can’t remember any more.

Personally, I would love the impetus to try new and crazy things.  I feel pretty boring lately with my suburban mom, soccer games, PTA, room mom, etc. identity.   However, I don’t want my identity stolen to do it.

Identity theft can be extremely detrimental to your credit score, your personal finances, and would just be a huge headache to deal with cancelling all the “fake” cards and dealing with the credit bureaus to get it resolved.

What a pain!

I know some people that are extremely concerned about the possibility of identity theft and have signed up for identity theft protection services.   Personally, I am wary and aware of the issue, but still have a the world is benign attitude and haven’t yet decided to take that step.  Plus it costs money and will both of us being broke and poor targets starting our own businesses I haven’t made the decision to justify the expense.

However, I also never used to have our house sprayed for spiders, but after my husband was bitten by a Hobo spider and his entire arm turned black and blue we  now have a quarterly service that comes and sprays.  Thankfully it was my husband and not our toddler.  I hope we don’t have to become victims before we decide it is worth it for identity theft protection!

Does having your house foreclosed on when you own it outright and have never had a mortgage loan count?
