We stopped paying for recycling service at our house. If you are part of an HOA, you likely won’t have this option – but it’s always good to know where you can drop recycling off if you don’t want to wait for your trash day – so go ahead and read anyway.
Our trash service charges an extra $5 per month for recycling service and they only picked up every other week. It was really irritating to try to remember which week was recycling week, and half the time we would get it backward, to the point it became a source of friction. I finally got fed up and stopped the service.
A woman at work mentioned some drop off sites that accepted recycling and they are nearby, so it’s pretty convenient. Just make sure you are dropping it off while you would have been out and about anyway, so it’s not an extra trip and therefore a gas expense.

- Municipal Court: 3030 Turnpike
- West View Recreation Center: 10747 West 108th Avenue
We’ve been doing this for about a year now and realize that you need to either get there really early on Saturday morning, or plan on dropping things off on Tuesday after the bins have been emptied. They are always full to the brim after the weekend.
Additionally, we separate out the aluminum cans and my 6 year old son, recycles them for cash. His last trip netted him $23.03 (about a month of collecting cans).
Total saved/earned by recycling on our own?
$5 per month x 12 months = $60
$20 per month x 12 months = $240
TOTAL = $300
